Just like lavender, Marseille soap is inseparable from our lovely Provence.

A true guarantee of quality and tradition, it was once forgotten, only to come back with force today.

Whether old-fashioned or contemporary, Marseille soap is a concentrate of benefits with multiple powers.

The superstar of soaps: authentic Marseille soap

Did you know that it was in 1370 that Crescas Davin became the first official soap-maker in the Marseille area?

The formula for his soap was regulated in the 17th century under King Louis XIV, and in 1688 Colbert passed an edict limiting the use of the name “Marseille soap” to soaps made in a cauldron using a precise process, composed of 72% pure olive oil, and in the Marseille region thanks to its abundant raw materials (olives and soda from the Camargue).

Genuine Marseille soap has now been awarded the “Living Heritage Company” label. The “savon de Marseille” label is not, however, a controlled designation, but rather a precise manufacturing process guaranteeing a minimum fatty acid content. This was to be discovered a few years later with fats other than olive oil, such as palm or coconut oil.

100% natural and fragrance-free, Fer à Cheval Marseille soap from Folies de Provence is available in green (olive oil) or white (palm or coconut oil) form only:

  • 300g pure olive oil cube for skin care
  • 300g vegetable oil cube for linen and home care
  • 100g sachet of Marseille soap shavings for natural, ecological and economical laundry.
  • 100g Cicada with hanging cord

It's a real ally for the body, with its nutritious and healthy virtues, but also for the house! For example, green soap with olive oil is ideal for skin hygiene, hair and scalp care, toothpaste and shaving foam (to name but a few), and white soap for laundry care, floors, household products or as a stain remover. It's also said that placing a piece of Marseille soap at the bottom of your bed prevents night-time cramps!

However, despite its hypoallergenic properties, real Marseille soap can dry out some skins, so it's best to switch to an extra-mild soap enriched with sweet almond milk or an organic vegetable oil base.

Marseille soap enriched with sweet almond milk

Folies de Provence Marseille soaps are handcrafted in the Aubagne soap factory. Paraben- and silicone-free, they also contain 72% vegetable oils and are enriched with sweet almond milk for more intense moisturizing.

These extra-gentle Marseille soaps have evolved over time, but they're made with the same know-how as the master soap-makers of the past, with a little something extra: a gentle Grasse fragrance.

Its rectangular format is more practical than a cube in the shower, and its foaming texture, moisturizing and nourishing properties and range of scents make it ideal for the hands, face and body of the whole family.

Our Tip: As Marseille soap is imperishable, you can also put it in your cupboards to perfume your laundry!
