There are several theories about the history of Valentine's Day, but their origins remain uncertain.
According to one theory, one of the most popular pagan festivals, Lupercalia, was celebrated in mid-February, when young men drew lots to select a young woman to be their partner for the duration of the festivities.
Another theory suggests that Saint Valentine's Day is linked to a Christian priest named Valentine, who was imprisoned and executed on February 14 for secretly celebrating marriages banned by the Roman emperor Claudius II. He then became the patron saint of lovers.
From the Middle Ages onwards, Valentine's Day really became a festival associated with courtly love. In the 14th century, the custom of sending sweet bills to loved ones spread to England.
Then, in the 18th century, Valentine's Day became a more commercial holiday. Greeting cards and gifts became more popular.
Today, Valentine's Day is celebrated all over the world, with different traditions in each country and sometimes on different dates. Couples exchange gifts and greeting cards, florists are raided and restaurants are usually fully booked.
